The British Stainless Steel Association (BSSA) is delighted to welcome Alloy Wire International (AWI) as a new member. As a world-leading manufacturer of precision-drawn wire, bars, and wire rope made from over 60 high-performance nickel alloys, Alloy Wire International brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Association.
Since its formation in 1946 by John Stockdale, AWI has been a trusted supplier of precision wire products, known for their unmatched quality, accuracy, and delivery performance. What started as a small operation in an old ambulance station on Lawrence Lane, Old Hill, has grown into a truly international business, now exporting wire to more than 70 countries across the globe.
Operating from two state-of-the-art factories in the UK and a network of 45 international offices, Alloy Wire International serves 15 demanding industries, including aerospace, nuclear, automotive, chemical, electronic, medical and oil and gas. Notably, the company also supports niche customers who require small quantities of specialist wire for unique applications.
With an extensive stock of 400 tonnes of DFARS and EU-compliant raw material, the company ensures rapid turnaround times, delivering products within an industry-leading three weeks. Its precision wires, available in round, flat, and profile options, range in size from 0.025mm to 21mm, offering flexibility for both small and medium batch orders.
A recent £1m investment in cutting-edge machinery, employee development, and research & development has kept AWI at the forefront of its sector. Technical expertise, development of its own in-house testing and a commitment to innovation have been lauded by customers worldwide.
As a testament to its dedication to quality and safety, Alloy Wire International holds numerous approvals, including AS9100, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 13485, ensuring compliance with stringent global industry standards.
Tom Mander, Managing Director of Alloy Wire International said:
“We decided to join the BSSA following a chance meeting at the UK Metals Expo at the NEC a few weeks ago. While stainless steel wire represents only a small portion of our business, customers often turn to us when they have bespoke requirements – whether it’s for an unusual wire diameter, tight tolerances, or specialised tensile strength.
“Additionally, we excel in producing made-to-order solutions, and our ability to offer very short lead times frequently wins us new business.
“Alloy Wire International is known for delivering high-quality products, providing first-class customer service, and ensuring fast deliveries. By joining the BSSA, we’re looking forward to not only enhancing our presence in the stainless steel sector, but also raising awareness of the wider range of materials we offer, particularly our high-performance nickel alloys, such as Inconel, Nimonic, and Hastelloy.”
AWI is passionate about the communities it operates in and, to mark its 75th anniversary, launched its ‘Wired for Good’ campaign that has directly contributed over £50,000 to various good causes across the West Midlands.
These range from Fisher House, Sands, the baby loss charity, Mary Stevens Hospice and the Chris Westwood Charity for Children with Physical Disabilities, to the Giving Hands Mission, Acorns Children’s Hospice, and male mental health help group ‘Tough Enough to Care’.
It also recently made its largest donation yet, contributing £10,000 to Guide Dogs to support vital services for people with sight loss. This includes the sponsorship of a guide dog puppy named ‘Allie,’ who is currently training to join one of 200 active guide dog partnerships currently serving the Black Country, Shropshire, and Staffordshire.
The BSSA is excited to see how Alloy Wire International’s membership will strengthen its collaborative initiatives in advancing stainless steel products and supporting the wider wire industry.
